CryptoFD Help: Home

Flash Drive and Memory Chip CryptoFD is designed to protect files on USB flash drives, CF cards, SD Memory Cards, and Micro-SD Cards. By using USB Memory Card Adapter Drives, Multi-Card Reader/Writers, and built in memory chip reader/writer slots, flash memory devices of almost any type can be used in place of a flash drive. This allows inexpensive flash drives, CF cards, SD Memory Cards, and Micro-SD Cards to be protected from unauthorized use in the event they are copied, lost or stolen. CryptoFD secured files are unreadable and anonymous on the target device.

The primary function of CryptoFD is to copy files to and from your desktop or laptop. When copying files to the flash drive the files are encrypted and renamed. When copied from the flash drive they are decrypted and returned to their original file name. Additionally, functions to shred files, wipe drives, list drive information, and rename the drive are available.Drives and Chips

Portability

You may want to decrypt files on a machine that doesn't have CryptoFD installed. If the machine is running Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7, you can.

To allow decryption on another Windows® machine, a functionally limited copy of CryptoFD and an auto run file are placed on the flash drive (or memory chip) when a new password is created. Only the Decrypt command will function when executing CryptoFD from the removable device.

If you do not want a device to be portable, either uncheck the portability option on the New Password panel when entering a new password or use the Tools menu portability commands. The drive must then be decrypted on a machine with CryptoFD installed.

Passwords

Passwords can be from 4 to 96 characters and are case sensitive. Any character that can be typed can be used. Embedded blanks are permitted, but leading and trailing blanks are stripped. The following are examples of valid passwords:

The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog's back.

TANSTAAFL

He asked, "Can quotes be used?". She replied, "Of course!".

Fire and Ice

...we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

Caution should be used with special characters. If you plan on decrypting on a machine other than the one on which the files were encrypted, the keyboards may not have the same set of special characters. Also, keyboards for different languages will have more or different characters. After encrypting to the device for the first time, decrypt a file to ensure your password is what was intended. (Especially if it is a long password.)
